TWAS and the TWAS Sub‐Saharan Africa Regional Partner (TWAS‐SAREP) are pleased to invite you to attend a panel session on “Big data and data analytics in the global south” to be held during the Science Forum South Africa (SFSA) in Pretoria from 4 ‐ 6 December 2019.
Advances in many applications of science including robotics, digitalization and measurement software, have resulted in an unprecedented accumulation of extremely large data sets. The leaps in communication technologies and the proliferation of mobile devices also mean that accessibility to data is no longer a major issue. In addition to the challenges of the analysis of “big data”, there are also great opportunities for learning and extracting useful information.
Over the last 5 years, there has been a huge interest in the areas of big data and data analytics in Africa, as it can both help research in multiple scientific fields and create new prospects and employment opportunities. Data analytics and “machine learning” are powerful tools with the potential to accomplish complex tasks at levels beyond human skills. These tools can be utilized to collect, organize and analyse large and varied data sets in order to discern patterns and trends with which one can then address problems peculiar to health, economy and the environment. Many of these issues have particular relevance to developing countries and also sustainability: work in these areas and sensitizing young researcher to the great potential within these new tools can result in new employment opportunities as well as innovation in general.
The session is envisaged to be in two parts:
a) 10‐minute presentations of cutting‐edge and thought‐provoking applications by four panel members;
b) A question‐and‐answer session.
The TWAS Associate Programme Officer, Sena Galazzi will be present at the event and looks forward to meeting you there.
Kindly note you are requested to arrange and cover your own travel to and from the CSIR Campus in Pretoria.
