Coovadia is Emeritus Prof. of Paediatrics and Child Health, Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, U. of KwaZulu-Natal, in Durban, and Director, MatCH, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He has done extensive work on the immunodeficiency of malnutrition, infectious diseases, renal disease in African children and pioneering studies on establishing that transmission of HIV from mother to child via breastfeeding is reduced if the mother exclusively breastfeeds or the breastfeeding infant given antiretrovirals. His group has shown that micronutrients are important for reducing the severity of specific infectious diseases. Member of the Science Acad. of South Africa. Awards include Science for Society Gold Medal; Heroes in Medicine Award; and Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights; foundation Gold Medal of the South African Medical Association for the Art and Science of Medicine.
