Choonara, Yahya

Yahya E. Choonara is currently an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology at Wits University and senior research scientist at the Wits Advanced Drug Delivery Platform (WADDP) Research Unit. He works closely with the WADDP and other experts in the field locally and abroad in countries such as the USA, Netherlands, Japan, India, Germany, Argentina, Tanzania, Israel and Mauritius. He is an expert in Computational Pharmaceutics and 'PharMATHaceutics', a novel concept which he has coined, for implementing unique computational algorithms that assist in the optimization of drug delivery systems. Prof. Choonara is a co-inventor of over 40 local and international patents with 18 granted and 22 under prosecution in the USA, Europe, China, Japan and South Africa. In addition, he currently co-supervisors a large cohort of over 70 postgraduate students at the PhD, Masters, Honors and Postdoctoral levels. He also is a member of several prestigious academic and scientific organizations such as the Controlled Release Society (CRS) (UK), the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) (USA), ex-Executive Board Member of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of South Africa (APPSA), a Founding Board Member of the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS)
