Warner is emeritus distinguished professor of natural philosophy and a Senior Scholar in the Department of Astronomy, University of Cape Town in Rondebosch, South Africa. He obtained his BSc, PhD and DSc in astronomy at University College, London, UK; MA and DSc at the University of Oxford, UK and in 2009 received DSc (honoris causa), Univ. of Cape Town. His honorary Fellowships include: University of Cape Town; Royal Astronomical Society; Royal Society of South Africa; and Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand. He has received several honours including: McIntyre Award and Gill Medal, Astronomical Society of Southern Africa; South Africa Medal, South African Association for the Advancement of Science; John F.W.Herschel Medal, Royal Society of South Africa; and University of Cape Town Book Award.
