Nyokong is a distinguished professor of Chemistry at Rhodes University, South Africa. She obtained her PhD in Chemistry in 1987 at the University of Western Ontario. Her research involves the development of drugs for the treatment of cancer using light. She has won many awards including L’Oreal-UNESCO award for “Women in Science” as a Laureate representing Africa and the Arab States and Shorprite-Checkers Woman of the year. Bestowed with the Order of Mapungubwe by President Mbeki for her contribution to science. She was named IT News Africa as one of the top 10 most influential women in science and technology in Africa, included in CENIEH, Spain as part of '12 names to change the world', received RSC (UK) Distinguished Women in Chemistry award, invited by Director-General of UNESCO, to be a member of the High-level panel on Science, Technology and Innovation for sustainable Development.
