At the Council for Scientific Research (CSIR), Pretoria, Piet Steyn (PhD 1966, UNISA, Pretoria) studied the structural elucidation and biogenesis of mycotoxins, e.g. aflatoxins, ochratoxins and tremorgenic mycotoxins. He was founding dir., Div. of Food Science and Techn., CSIR; SASOL prof. of Chem., U. of Potchefstroom and Senior Dir. (Research), Stellenbosch U., until 2008. Internationally, he served as pres., ICC, Vienna, and IUPAC, NC, USA. He is a member of four science academies. He received the ICC Friedrich Schweitzer Medal, and gold medals from the South African Chemical Inst., CSIR; SA Acad. for Science and Arts; SA Assn. for the Advancement of Science; Acad. of Science of SA; the top award of the Natl. Science and Technology Forum; Natl. Order of Mapungubwe (Class Silver) of the Republic of SA for research on mycotoxins; M.T. Steyn Gold Medal, SA Acad. of Science and Arts.
