Mshigeni (PhD, botanical sciences, 1974, U. of Hawaii) is Chairman, Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC); Vice Chancellor, Hubert Kairuki Memorial U., Tanzania; Founder member and former Secr. Gen., Tanzania Acad. of Sciences (TAAS). He was Founder UNESCO/UNU Africa Chair for spearheading the UNU ZERI Programme in Africa; Regional Director, UNDP/UNOPS programme on sustainable development for Africa's biodiversity; Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic and Research), U. of Namibia; Prof. of Botany and Founding. Dir. of Postgrad. Studies, U. of Dar es Salaam; and Editor-in-Chief, Discovery and Innovation journal. He is Fellow, African Academy of Sciences (AAS); World Technology Network (WTN). He received the Boutros-Boutros Ghali prize for Africa; the AAS/CIBA Prize for Agricultural Biosciences; and the Association of African Universities (AAU) Higher Education and Research Excellence Award.
